Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Transcript video. [First voice, Steve Jobs, at commencement speech Stanford University, 2005] You can’t connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them, looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something; your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing the dots will connect down the road, will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path. And that will make all the difference.

Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spending it in a miserable way.

[Second voice, Alan Watts] What would you like to do if money were no object? How would you REALLY enjoy spending your life. Well, it’s so amazing as a result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say: ‘well, we’d like to be painters, poets, writers, but as everybody knows you can’t earn any money that way.’ And another person says ‘I’d like to live an outdoor’s life and ride horses’. If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you’ll spend your life completely wasting your time. You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing. Which is stupid! Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spending it in a miserable way. And afterall, if you do really like what you’re doing it doesn’t matter what it is. You can eventually (“…”) become a master in it. The only way to become a master in it. (“….”) But it is absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don’t like in order to go on spending things you don’t like, doing things you don’t like and to teach your children to follow in the same track! And so, therefore it’s so important to consider this question:

What do I desire?

[Next voice, Steve Jobs, at commencement speech Stanford University, 2005] Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important: Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the way to only be truly satisfied is to do work that you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work, is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle. As we’re all matters of the heart, you know when you find it. And like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking. Stay hungry, stay foolish.

You’ve got to find what you love.
